About this collection

Sometimes a car’s most interesting specification was a box on the order form. Alongside the standard engine, buyers could select a higher state of tune, paying for changes that gave an established model a different mechanical character. This collection gathers cars whose factory options offered meaningful extra performance, exploring the engineering behind those choices and the sometimes complicated identities they created. The changes could take many forms: larger valves, higher compression, revised camshafts, additional carburettors or a more extensive package involving transmission, suspension and brakes. Their significance depends on what they achieved together. A higher power figure might produce stronger acceleration, greater flexibility or an engine that rewarded higher revs, with each approach bringing different benefits and compromises. The relationship between specification and appearance is equally interesting. Some upgrades came with distinctive badges, instruments or body details; others were available beneath largely familiar bodywork, leaving the order sheet to explain what made the car special. Even within one range, a performance name could describe a particular combination of engine and styling rather than every car fitted with the uprated machinery. Those distinctions matter today, especially where later modifications have blurred the difference between original factory specification and subsequent conversion. Build records, option codes and contemporary catalogues become part of understanding the car itself. This collection focuses on options that reveal something worthwhile about a manufacturer’s engineering priorities, its customers’ expectations and the way performance was offered for sale. Factory Performance Options brings together these alternative specifications while preserving the particular choices, limitations and identities behind each one.
